This month, the Surrey Christmas Bureau is experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand for assistance, marking the highest need in its 45-year history. According to Karmin Dhindsa, the program coordinator, the organization has received over 3,600 applications for holiday support, with 2,400 families qualifying for help.

In an email sent to news outlets on December 4, 2023, Dhindsa highlighted the record numbers, stating, “We are experiencing the highest need in our 45+ year history.” The Bureau operates the Toy Depot in Whalley, located at the former Canadian Tire store on 13665 102 Ave. This facility is crucial for distributing toys and gifts to families in need during the holiday season.

Dhindsa emphasized the importance of community involvement, urging local residents to donate. “Every contribution helps us provide grocery support and meaningful gifts so families can experience the holidays with joy, dignity, and a sense of belonging,” she stated. The charity is accepting cash donations, unwrapped new toys, and gift cards. Those wishing to contribute can visit the Toy Depot or donate online at christmasbureau.com. Alternatively, individuals can call 604-581-9623 for more information on how to get involved.

Preparations for this year’s holiday season began on November 5, when volunteers moved truckloads of toys, shelving, and supplies to the Toy Depot. As in previous years, there is a significant need for gifts suitable for teenagers. Dhindsa mentioned that items such as makeup products, hair products, sporting equipment like basketballs, and headphones are particularly sought after. “Gift cards are nice because they can go to the store and buy themselves something,” she added, underscoring the desire to provide teenagers with gifts that resonate with their interests.

As the holiday season approaches, the Surrey Christmas Bureau’s efforts to support local families are crucial. The record demand highlights the growing need for community support, and the organization hopes that increased awareness will lead to more contributions, allowing them to fulfill their mission of bringing joy and dignity to families during this festive time.
