The inaugural Big Red Pull organized by the United Way Centraide North East Ontario proved to be a remarkable success, raising a total of $18,000 for community initiatives. Taking place on March 6, 2024, this fundraising event featured eleven local teams competing to pull a fully-equipped fire truck over a distance of 100 feet in the shortest time possible.

The funds raised will support critical local programs aimed at assisting the most marginalized members of the community. Cory Roslyn, the executive director of United Way Centraide North East Ontario, highlighted the significance of the contributions. “The money will support over 49 local community organizations that run programs focused on three priority areas: moving from poverty to possibility, supporting children and youth, and building strong and healthy communities,” she stated.

Fire Truck Challenge Tests Team Strength

The event presented a formidable challenge as the Greater Sudbury Fire Services provided the fire truck for the competition. Deputy Chief Jesse Oshell elaborated on the challenge posed by the vehicle, which weighs approximately 25 tonnes. “It does have a tank full of water in it, which adds a bit of a disadvantage for those who are pulling it,” he explained. “However, once you get that momentum going, the truck will roll pretty well on this flat surface.”

The competition not only tested physical strength but also fostered a sense of community spirit among participants and spectators alike.

Vale Team One Claims Victory

The winning team, Vale Team One, comprised of members from mine rescue, completed the pull in an impressive 16.62 seconds. Team member Kordell Hull expressed pride in their achievement and the event itself. “Getting to compete with our fellow mine rescuers is fantastic; we are all volunteer-based, so it’s great when we can come together for a team-building event,” Hull remarked. “The energy out here today was amazing, and it was good to see all the teams competing for a common goal.”

The overwhelming success of the Big Red Pull has prompted the United Way to announce that it will become an annual tradition. The combination of teamwork, community engagement, and a unique challenge has proven to be an effective formula for fundraising, ensuring the event’s return to support local causes in the future.
