A new pedestrian and cyclist overpass bridge has been successfully installed over Highway 1, enhancing connectivity between Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake. The construction operation took place overnight on November 9, 2025, with crews shutting down a 10-kilometre stretch of the highway to facilitate the lift of the pre-built, 400-tonne structure. This significant undertaking involved a carefully planned process, culminating in the use of two computer-controlled platforms to rotate the massive bridge into its final position.

The new bridge deck rises 5.7 metres above the roadway, surpassing the height of the nearby Kensington Avenue crossing. This area is known for its busy traffic and merging lanes, making it challenging and unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists. The installation of the bridge aims to create a safe and seamless connection between the trails of Burnaby Lake to the north and Deer Lake to the south, ultimately forming a new north-south active transportation route in the city.

Planning and Design

Planning for the bridge project commenced in 2019. The City of Burnaby evaluated four potential designs and locations before selecting the most cost-effective option, situated at the foot of Claude Avenue. This chosen design was praised for its geotechnical stability and minimal environmental impact. The bridge is constructed from Canadian weathered steel, which is known for its corrosion resistance and durability, making it suitable for outdoor infrastructure.

The bridge features a wide deck designed to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists, with seamless ramp access for easy passage. Its impressive arch design will also be highlighted by nighttime illumination, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the structure.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $25 million, funded through contributions from municipal, provincial, and federal governments, as well as TransLink, the regional transportation authority. Jacob Brothers is the designated contractor for this ambitious project, which commenced construction in early 2024.

City officials anticipate that the overpass will be opened to the public in early 2026, marking a significant step forward in enhancing active transportation infrastructure in Burnaby. The successful installation of the bridge is a testament to the extensive planning and collaboration among various stakeholders aimed at improving safety and accessibility for all road users.
