Dr. James Dobson, the influential founder of the conservative Christian organization Focus on the Family, passed away on August 21, 2025, at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, marking the end of a significant era in American evangelical leadership.

Born in 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dobson gained prominence as a child psychologist and radio host. He established Focus on the Family in 1977, which grew to employ over 1,000 people at its peak. The organization became a powerful voice in American politics, advocating against abortion and LGBTQ+ rights while promoting conservative family values.

In the 1980s, Dobson emerged as a key figure in the religious right, joining influential leaders such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. He played a pivotal role in mobilizing religious conservatives into the political mainstream. His efforts were acknowledged by Falwell, who referred to Dobson as a “rising star” in 1989. Later, he served on President Donald Trump‘s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board, further solidifying his impact on American politics.

Dobson left Focus on the Family in 2010 and founded the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, continuing his mission through the nationally syndicated radio show, Family Talk. The program is broadcast on over 1,500 radio stations and reaches more than half a million listeners each week, according to the institute.

His family released a statement following his passing, expressing that “Dr. Dobson’s impact endures through the many lives he touched, the families he strengthened, and the unshakable faith he proclaimed.” Gary Bauer, a senior vice president at Dobson’s institute, described him as a “pioneer” who supported families amid evolving societal values.

Dobson was known for his candid interviews, including a notable exchange with former President Ronald Reagan in the Oval Office in 1985, where he thanked Reagan for prioritizing family issues. He also conducted a chilling interview with serial killer Ted Bundy the day before Bundy’s execution in 1989. During their conversation, Bundy claimed that pornography had played a role in his violent behavior, a statement that sparked considerable debate.

In his later years, Dobson continued to speak out against what he viewed as moral decline in society, focusing on issues such as pornography and family values. His advocacy and teachings have had a lasting influence on many within the evangelical community and beyond.

Dobson is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, their children, Ryan and Danae, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren. His legacy as a prominent voice in conservative Christian discourse will be remembered by many.
