Virtual Reality Initiative Aims to Support Indigenous Youth in Saskatchewan

A new initiative harnessing virtual reality (VR) technology is set to enhance the wellbeing of Indigenous youth in northern Saskatchewan. The program, titled Virtual Interventions and Community Connections for Indigenous Youth (VICCIY), aims to provide innovative support tailored to the specific needs of these communities. The initiative has been under development since 2021, evolving through consultations with local youth to ensure it meets their expectations and requirements.
Lindsey Boechler, the initiative lead at VICCIY, highlighted the enthusiasm young people have shown for the use of VR. “What really intrigues the youth is exploring different ways to connect and meet others, or learn from role models,” Boechler noted. The project has already hosted two provincial youth summits, gathering over 60 participants from across Saskatchewan. Throughout these conferences, a significant focus was placed on the potential role of VR technology in improving mental wellness.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 98 percent of respondents expressing a willingness to engage with VR or to try it out. This response underscores a strong interest among youth in innovative approaches to mental health support.
Joey Genereaux, a youth advocate involved with VICCIY, emphasized the transformative potential of VR programming. He remarked, “I think this virtual stuff is going to be an amazing thing to connect with these kids in the north that really need the help, to inspire them to make different changes in their lives.”
Currently, VICCIY is in Phase 2 of its rollout. This autumn, the program will expand to include six northern communities during the school year. The input from youth has been a crucial aspect of the program’s development, and Boechler expressed hopes that this model of engagement will be adopted by similar initiatives in the future. “When we are trying to support this generation that’s going to lead our province, I think it’s imperative we really start listening,” she stated.
VICCIY represents a significant step forward in utilizing technology to address mental health challenges within Indigenous communities. By focusing on the needs and preferences of youth, the initiative aims to foster connections and improve overall wellbeing in these underserved areas. The implementation of VR technology not only reflects an innovative approach but also highlights the importance of youth engagement in developing effective support systems.
