Charities Share Seasonal Donation Needs as Holiday Approaches
As the holiday season approaches, local charities in Montreal are clarifying their donation needs to ensure support reaches those who need it most. Organizations including Moisson Montreal and Saint Michael’s Mission have outlined specific items that would greatly help their efforts.
Essential Donations for Families and Individuals
At Moisson Montreal, the largest food bank in the city, Executive Director Matias Duque emphasizes the importance of baby products. “We love receiving baby formula. We even love receiving diapers,” Duque stated. These items are often too costly for families relying on food banks, making donations vital. The organization typically distributes food directly to smaller banks across the region.
Canned or shelf-stable items are preferred for individual donations, although there are exceptions. “We cannot accept food that’s gone bad or past its best-before date,” Duque explained. Damaged packaging also poses challenges. He noted that many people do not realize the impact of simply purchasing a second item during grocery shopping, which can significantly assist those in need. “It’s important for people who are skipping meals to have the best food,” he added, recognizing that even treats like chips can bring joy to families reliant on food banks.
Clothing and Volunteer Needs
At Saint Michael’s Mission, located on Stanley Street, the need for specific clothing items is acute. The soup kitchen and homeless services centre distributes 50 to 60 clothing items daily, with a pressing demand for men’s winter boots, especially in sizes 9 to 13. Executive Director Andrew Marrocco noted that new socks and underwear in all sizes are also crucial.
While used clothing can be accepted, Marrocco urges donors to consider the condition of their items. “If you’re giving something because you can’t use it anymore because it’s worn out, then probably you shouldn’t be giving it,” he advised. The Mission cannot accept furniture, despite some attempts from donors to offer items that may not be suitable for distribution.
To streamline the donation process, the Mission has created an Amazon wishlist, enabling Montrealers to purchase items directly.
Chez Doris, which caters to women experiencing homelessness or precarious living situations, has additional needs, including volunteers. Executive Director Diane Pilote highlighted that they are particularly in need of gently used or new snow gear and underwear. Cosmetics are also welcome, as many women appreciate beauty products during difficult times.
While the organization does not accept baby products, it requires a limited number of men’s shoes, especially smaller sizes suitable for women.
Across all charities, financial donations remain a constant necessity, allowing organizations to meet changing needs effectively.
For those looking to support local charities, a broad list of acceptable items is available, including specifics from various organizations such as the Native Women’s Shelter and Logifem.
As the holiday season brings a spirit of giving, understanding what charities truly need can ensure that donations make a meaningful impact in the community.
