Two Human Cases of West Nile Virus Confirmed in South East Health Unit

Residents of the South East Health Unit (SEHU) are being urged to take precautions against mosquito bites following the confirmation of two cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the region. One case is confirmed, while the other is classified as probable. The affected individuals reside in the Rideau Lakes area near Westport and the Smiths Falls area.
According to the SEHU, WNV has been detected in birds and mosquitoes throughout the region over the years. This ongoing presence highlights the potential risk for human infections. Since monitoring began in June 2025, positive mosquito pools carrying the virus have also been identified within the health unit’s jurisdiction.
Understanding West Nile Virus
WNV is primarily spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. While many people may experience mild symptoms or none at all, the virus can lead to more severe neurological conditions in some cases. The SEHU emphasizes the importance of awareness and prevention methods to reduce the risk of infection among residents.
To mitigate the chances of contracting WNV, health officials recommend several strategies. These include using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long sleeves and pants during peak mosquito activity, and ensuring that standing water around homes is eliminated to prevent mosquito breeding.
The SEHU remains vigilant in monitoring the situation and encourages residents to report any unusual bird deaths, as these can be indicators of WNV activity in the area. Ongoing surveillance and public health messaging will continue as part of the health unit’s commitment to community safety.
As the summer months approach, residents are reminded to stay informed and take necessary precautions. With the emergence of these cases, a proactive approach is crucial in combating the spread of West Nile Virus within the community.
