The South East Health Unit (SEHU) has reported the first two human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) for the year, prompting a reminder for residents to take precautions against mosquito bites. One case is confirmed in a resident from the Rideau Lakes area, while a probable case has been identified in Smiths Falls.

These developments highlight the ongoing presence of WNV within the region, as birds and mosquitoes carrying the virus have been detected across the SEHU area in previous years. Since monitoring began in June 2025, positive mosquito pools have already been identified, indicating an active risk of infection.

Residents are advised to implement protective measures, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed. The SEHU emphasizes the importance of these actions, especially during the warmer months when mosquito activity is at its highest.

According to health officials, WNV is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most individuals infected with the virus experience mild symptoms, but severe cases can lead to neurological complications, particularly in older adults and those with weakened immune systems.

In light of these recent cases, the SEHU urges community members to stay informed about the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases and to report any unusual bird deaths to local health authorities. This proactive approach can help in monitoring and managing the spread of WNV in the region.

As the summer progresses, continued vigilance is essential to safeguard public health against West Nile Virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
