The annual Terry Fox Runs held across Grey and Bruce counties on Sunday raised over $100,000 for cancer research, marking a significant milestone in the fight against the disease. This year’s event coincided with the 45th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, which commenced on April 12, 1980.

Kathy Beattie, the organizer of the Owen Sound run, reported that the event at Harrison Park attracted approximately 185 participants, as well as numerous dogs, including a hedgehog. The Owen Sound run alone raised a total of $19,532 from both online and day-of registrations. Beattie expressed gratitude in an email, saying, “We couldn’t have asked for better weather or greater support from our community.”

The impact of this year’s runs extended beyond Owen Sound. Across the region, about ten communities organized their own events, contributing significantly to the overall fundraising total. Notable fundraising efforts included Hanover with $1,960, Kincardine at $14,898, and Saugeen Shores in Port Elgin, which raised an impressive $26,465. The cumulative total from these efforts adds to the ongoing legacy of Terry Fox.

Honoring Terry Fox’s Legacy

Terry Fox’s journey began when he dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean, symbolizing the start of his trans-Canada run to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Over the course of 143 days, he ran an average of 42 kilometers (approximately 26 miles) daily, covering a staggering 5,373 kilometers (more than 3,300 miles) before cancer returned, forcing him to stop on September 1, 1980. His determination and spirit inspired millions across Canada, leading to his goal of raising $1 from every Canadian, culminating in over $850 million raised through the Terry Fox Run.

This year, the Terry Fox Foundation has introduced several initiatives to commemorate the 45th anniversary. These include a commemorative merchandise collection, the national Ride of Hope, the release of a new picture book titled T is for Terry: An ABC of Courage, and a documentary titled Run Terry Run. The foundation also plans to reissue the iconic Adidas Orion shoes that Terry wore during his journey.

On September 21, the Terry Fox Run on Confederation Bridge will return after a decade-long hiatus, expected to be the largest event of its kind. Additionally, the Terry Fox School Run is set for September 25, with over 10,000 schools across Canada anticipated to participate.

The Terry Fox Foundation continues to be a beacon of hope for many, fostering unity and resilience in the face of cancer. For more information about their initiatives and fundraising efforts, visit terryfox.org.

The collective efforts of participants, volunteers, and supporters across Canada reflect a deep commitment to advancing cancer research and honoring the legacy of one of the nation’s most beloved figures.
