From Cancer Research to Communications: Garth Finch’s Journey
When Garth Finch began his studies at Western University, he envisioned a future in laboratory research, focusing on cancer biology. Specializing in biochemistry and cancer biology, Finch worked on melanoma research during his undergraduate program, earning his Bachelor of Medical Science in 2020. However, he discovered a passion for communications that would ultimately reshape his career trajectory.
Finch, who has always identified as a “science guy,” found greater fulfillment in explaining complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, particularly the public. “I just loved telling the story,” he stated. “It was fun to see how our discoveries fit into the broader scientific narrative.” This newfound interest prompted Finch to reconsider his career path, despite the challenge of leaving behind a supportive lab environment.
After a period of travel and self-discovery, Finch returned to Western to pursue a Master of Media in Journalism and Communication (MMJC), which he described as meeting all his academic and professional aspirations. “My experience in MMJC was just phenomenal. It was everything I wanted and more,” he reflected.
Bootcamp Experience Fuels Growth
Finch likened the MMJC program to a “training ground” or bootcamp, integrating his scientific background with storytelling and performance skills from his childhood theatre days in Paisley, Scotland. One notable experience involved a mock press conference where Finch played the role of a CEO facing criticism for a faulty product. “I got to apply all those strategic communication skills I’d been learning in real time,” he said, highlighting the program’s intense yet rewarding nature.
Throughout the year, Finch engaged with state-of-the-art equipment and benefited from personalized assignments that aligned with his interests. He collaborated with Wellspring London, a cancer support organization, to create a video series celebrating their 25th anniversary. “Those projects couldn’t be done without the structure of the program,” he noted. “It’s important to give back in different ways in a university town.”
Graduating in 2025 with a robust portfolio and an internship at the Métis National Council, Finch has continued his role there post-internship. This position allows him to work at the intersection of communications and policy, emphasizing values-driven work. “It’s really work with a purpose,” he added, expressing his desire to maintain such meaningful engagement in his future career.
Cultivating Connections and Impact
Finch’s journey has not followed a conventional path, which he considers a strength. A shy child initially, he pursued theatre, nurturing a love for singing, dancing, and acting, even starring as Billy Flynn in a production of *Chicago* during his undergraduate years. He attributes much of his current success in communications to these performance skills, which help him gauge audience reactions and adapt accordingly.
As a dual citizen of the UK and Canada, Finch spent summers in Canada before committing to his undergraduate studies at Western, easing his transition into university life. The supportive residence experience, complemented by the Soph program, further solidified his sense of community at Western. “When you have Sophs that understand the value of community, great things happen,” he remarked.
Despite his shift toward communications, Finch remains connected to his scientific roots. He continues to freelance, training AI models to enhance their utility for clinicians, a role he began before entering graduate studies. “The move to communications just feels right,” Finch concluded. “I’ve never felt that sense of being where I’m meant to be before. I’m absolutely there now.”
As Garth Finch embarks on his career, he is committed to making a meaningful impact, bridging the gap between science and storytelling.
