WCDSB Launches Livestreams for Enhanced Meeting Transparency

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) has officially begun livestreaming its meetings, a significant change aimed at improving transparency for the new school year. This decision, which reverses a two-year restriction on video and audio recordings initiated in 2023, reflects the board’s commitment to fostering a more open environment for community engagement.
Previously, the board imposed restrictions on recordings due to safety concerns expressed by trustees and staff during meetings. According to a spokesperson, the WCDSB required all guests to sign in, introduced security personnel, and eliminated the option for livestream viewing. In April 2023, following community feedback, the board decided to reinstate livestreaming, allowing stakeholders to participate remotely.
During the first livestreamed meeting of the academic year on Monday evening, Lema Salaymeh, senior manager of communications at WCDSB, noted, “Our first livestreamed Board meeting went smoothly, with just under five community members tuning in. We’re pleased the technology worked well and grateful to those who joined us.” Salaymeh expressed optimism that as awareness of the new feature grows, more families and community members will engage with the board’s activities throughout the year.
Members of the public can access the livestreams through the WCDSB website, with recordings available on the board’s YouTube channel for those who missed the live event. This initiative marks a pivotal shift in the WCDSB’s approach to communication, aligning with broader trends in educational governance that prioritize transparency and community involvement.
As the school year progresses, the WCDSB aims to enhance its outreach efforts, encouraging greater participation from the community. The livestreaming of board meetings is expected to be a crucial tool in achieving that goal, enabling stakeholders to stay informed about decisions that affect local schools and educational policies.
