University of Victoria Ranks Among Canada’s Top 20 Research Institutions

The University of Victoria (UVic) has been recognized as one of Canada’s top 20 research universities for 2024, securing the 18th position in a recent ranking by Research Infosource Inc.. This marks an improvement of two spots compared to the previous year, highlighting the institution’s growing impact in the research landscape.

According to the ranking, UVic achieved a sponsored research income of $168,000 in 2024, which represents a significant increase of 20.3 percent from 2023. Sponsored research income encompasses all external funds received for research through grants, contracts, or contributions, underscoring the university’s success in attracting financial support.

Research Performance and Faculty Intensity

In addition to its overall ranking, the University of Victoria excelled in the comprehensive category for faculty research intensity, achieving an impressive $215,900 per faculty member. This figure reflects the research income allocated per faculty position, which has risen by 2.9 percent from fiscal 2023.

The data from Research Infosource Inc. also revealed broader trends in research funding across Canada. Total government funding for research increased by 3 percent to $6.21 billion in fiscal 2024. In contrast, total non-government funding saw more significant growth, rising by 7.8 percent to approximately $3.85 billion. These figures indicate a robust environment for research funding in the country.

Provincial and National Context

At the national level, the University of Toronto retained its position as the top research university, followed closely by Université de Montréal and McGill University. Within British Columbia, the University of British Columbia ranked fourth, falling two spots from the previous year. In the same province, UVic was followed by Simon Fraser University at 19th place, which also experienced a slight drop, and the University of Northern British Columbia at 39th.
