University of Guelph Celebrates Milestones and Innovations in 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, the University of Guelph (U of G) reflects on a transformative year filled with significant milestones and inspiring achievements that resonated within the academic community and beyond. Highlights include the inauguration of a new president, groundbreaking research initiatives, and a commitment to sustainability that underscores the university’s mission of improving life.

Dr. Rene Van Acker Takes Office

In July, Dr. Rene Van Acker was officially installed as U of G’s 10th president. A proud alumnus of the university, Dr. Van Acker brings nearly 30 years of academic experience to his new role. His extensive background includes senior leadership positions such as chair of the Department of Plant Agriculture and dean of the Ontario Agricultural College. His presidency is expected to guide the institution through its next chapter of growth and innovation.

Brand Refresh and Community Impact

In a move aimed at engaging the next generation of Gryphons, U of G unveiled a refreshed brand identity. Under the direction of creative manager Ethan Bersche, the update includes a modern logo and typography, designed to resonate with both current and prospective students.

One of the most heartwarming stories of the year came from Dave Burnett, who crossed the stage at convocation after 49 years of pursuing his degree. His remarkable journey, which began in 1976, has inspired countless graduates and received coverage from prominent media outlets such as CTV News and CBC News.

Innovative Research Initiatives

U of G has made significant strides in research and innovation. The university is collaborating with national partners to launch the Sustainable Food Systems for Canada (SF4C) initiative, a transformative platform aimed at establishing Canada as a leader in agri-food technology. This initiative has received over $16 million in funding, reflecting a commitment to advancing sustainable practices in agriculture.

As concerns about avian flu grow, researchers at U of G are actively working to combat the disease. Their efforts include developing a vaccine for birds and tracking the spread of the virus, contributing to global health initiatives that aim to prevent future pandemics.
