Nanan STEM Academy Celebrates Fourth Annual Student Fair in Saskatchewan
The Nanan STEM Academy hosted its fourth annual student fair at the Saskatchewan Science Centre, showcasing student projects in coding, robotics, video game design, 3D printing, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. The event, which took place on October 7, 2023, provided students with a platform to demonstrate their skills and creativity, reflecting the increasing importance of technology in education.
Co-founder Shaun Nanan expressed his enthusiasm for continuing this initiative, emphasizing its significance in the current technological landscape. “Students are using technology more than ever before, and this fair is an opportunity to apply those skills practically,” he noted. At the event, Nanan highlighted the educational benefits of STEM activities, stating, “They learn math, creativity, logical sequencing, troubleshooting, coding, and resiliency. They gain confidence while working on their video game projects.”
Beyond technical skills, Nanan aims to cultivate essential non-technical abilities among participants. He described skills such as leadership, collaboration, communication, and cultural competency as critical components of entrepreneurship. “The best way to impart these skills is through interactive STEM activities,” he explained. “As students collaborate with peers, they develop teamwork and confidence, which is evident when they present their projects to the public.”
Attending from Saskatoon, Abdurahman Honey, a student support assistant with Truly Alive, shared his insights on the robotics aspect of the fair. As a second-year student at the University of Saskatchewan, he aims to inspire younger students by introducing them to robotics. “Today is a learning stepping stone for them,” he remarked, hoping that this exposure will cultivate a lasting passion for technology. “It’s something fun that the kids have been doing, and I wanted to expose them to robotics-related activities.”
The Nanan STEM Academy expressed gratitude for the support and resources that have facilitated these events. According to Nanan, the academy organizes STEM fairs every six months, specifically in October and April, across Saskatchewan. This continuity allows students to engage regularly with technology and entrepreneurship, further enhancing their skills and confidence.
The student fair not only serves as a showcase for technical expertise but also reinforces the value of soft skills that are increasingly essential in today’s job market. By fostering an environment where creativity and collaboration thrive, the Nanan STEM Academy is helping shape the next generation of innovators and leaders.
