Kativik School Board Welcomes New Commissioner for Puvirnituq
The Kativik School Board has appointed a new commissioner for Puvirnituq. On December 2, 2023, Muncy Novalinga was officially sworn in as a member of the Kativik Ilisarniliriniq’s council of commissioners. This council serves as the highest authority within the school board, comprising 14 representatives, one from each community in Nunavik.
Muncy Novalinga’s appointment follows an election held in Puvirnituq, where he was acclaimed to the position. He takes over from Theresa Etok, who resigned from her role. The council of commissioners operates on a three-year mandate, ensuring that each community within Nunavik has a voice in educational governance.
Kativik Ilisarniliriniq is responsible for providing educational services across Nunavik, prioritizing Inuktitut as the first language of instruction. It also offers education in French and English as second languages. The board operates a network of 18 primary and secondary schools, along with six adult education centres throughout the region.
This transition in leadership represents an important step for the community of Puvirnituq, as Novalinga is tasked with furthering the educational mission of the board while addressing the unique needs of students in the area. As a member of the council, he will contribute to shaping policies and initiatives that impact the lives of many residents.
The Kativik School Board plays a crucial role in the educational landscape of Nunavik, where the preservation of language and culture is a central focus. Novalinga’s experience and commitment to the community will be pivotal as he navigates the challenges and opportunities ahead.
