Joliet Public Schools District 86 recently hosted its annual “Principal for a Day” event, inviting local community and business leaders into their elementary and junior high schools. This initiative allowed honorary principals to experience the daily routines and responsibilities of school leadership on October 20, 2023.

During the event, participants shadowed the district’s 21 school principals, engaging in various activities that included welcoming students, delivering morning announcements, and joining physical education classes. They also visited classrooms, read stories to students, supervised lunchroom activities, and monitored recess.

According to a news release from the district, Dr. Theresa Rouse, Superintendent of District 86, expressed gratitude towards the community members for their involvement. “We are grateful to these amazing community members for taking the time to visit our schools, engage with our exceptional students, and see the hard work our principals and staff put into their work each day,” she stated.

Honorary Principals Take on Leadership Roles

The event featured a diverse group of honorary principals from various sectors of the community. For example, Lashae Hudson from LeSheAnn LLC served at T.E. Culbertson Elementary, while Lorraine Guerrero from the Will County State’s Attorney Office took on duties at M.J. Cunningham Elementary.

Other notable honorary principals included Dr. Karl Brooks from Joliet Junior College at Dirksen Junior High, and Pastor Frank Edmon from Lively Hope Church at Eisenhower Academy. The initiative aimed to foster connections between schools and the community, highlighting the importance of local involvement in education.

Participants also included representatives from various local organizations, such as Jeff Pritz, a former member of the Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board, at Farragut Elementary, and Destiny Griffin from the Joliet Police Department at Hufford Junior High.

Building Community Connections Through Education

The “Principal for a Day” program serves not only to celebrate local leaders but also to strengthen the ties between schools and their communities. By allowing these individuals to step into leadership roles, the district aims to provide them with a deeper understanding of the educational environment and the challenges faced by schools.

As the honorary principals engaged with students and staff, they were able to witness firsthand the dedication and effort that goes into daily school operations. The positive feedback from both participants and school staff suggests that this initiative will continue to foster collaboration between the district and the local community.

This event exemplifies the commitment of District 86 to not only educate its students but also to involve the larger community in the process. With leaders from various sectors participating, the event underscores the shared responsibility of educating the youth and preparing them for the future.
