The Surrey Christmas Bureau is experiencing unprecedented demand this holiday season, reporting the highest need in its 45-year history. According to Karmin Dhindsa, program coordinator, the organization has received over 3,600 applications, with 2,400 families qualifying for support. This surge in requests significantly surpasses previous years.

In a communication to local media on December 4, 2023, Dhindsa emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We are experiencing the highest need in our 45+ year history.” The bureau operates the Toy Depot in Whalley, located at the former Canadian Tire store on King George Boulevard (13665 102 Ave.), where they provide essential support to families during the festive season.

Community Support Urgently Needed

Dhindsa has called for increased community engagement and donations to address this overwhelming demand. “Every contribution helps us provide grocery support and meaningful gifts so families can experience the holidays with joy, dignity, and a sense of belonging,” she stated. The bureau is accepting donations of cash, unwrapped new toys, and gift cards at the Toy Depot. Community members can also donate online at christmasbureau.com or contact the bureau at 604-581-9623 for more information on how to get involved.

In preparation for this busy season, volunteers began moving truckloads of toys, shelving, and supplies on November 5, 2023. The organization aims to assist thousands of families in need, highlighting the significant role that community involvement plays in their success.

Specific Needs Highlighted

The bureau has identified a particular need for gifts aimed at teenagers. Dhindsa pointed out that items such as makeup products, hair care items, sporting equipment like basketballs, and headphones are in high demand. Additionally, gift cards are welcomed, as they allow recipients to select items that resonate with their personal interests.

As the holiday season approaches, the Surrey Christmas Bureau remains focused on ensuring that families in the community can celebrate with the dignity and joy they deserve. The organization’s efforts to support those in need will depend heavily on the generosity of local residents and businesses.
