LeBlanc and Lutnick Discuss Trade Relations in Washington Meeting

Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s Trade Minister, met with Howard Lutnick, U.S. Commerce Secretary, in Washington on August 26, 2025. Their discussion focused on trade relations between Canada and the United States, particularly in the context of recent tariff adjustments announced by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
During the meeting, LeBlanc and Lutnick explored the implications of Canada’s decision to eliminate certain retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products. This move aligns with American tariff exemptions for goods covered under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). While Canada will cease some counter-tariffs, those on steel, aluminum, and automobiles will remain intact.
LeBlanc acknowledged that these counter-tariffs had been a significant contentious issue during negotiations with the previous U.S. administration. The aim is to establish a bilateral agreement that mitigates the pressures posed by U.S. tariffs on Canadian industries ahead of the upcoming CUSMA review.
Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, also participated in the discussions, highlighting the collaborative nature of the meeting.
LeBlanc emphasized the importance of these ongoing dialogues in fostering a more robust economic and security relationship between the two countries. As trade tensions have fluctuated, maintaining open lines of communication is critical for both nations.
This meeting signifies a proactive step towards addressing trade dynamics and securing a more favorable environment for industries affected by tariff policies. The Canadian government remains committed to ensuring that its trade strategies align with its economic interests while also accommodating the evolving landscape of international trade relations.
The meeting concluded with mutual optimism about future discussions, reflecting a commitment to resolving outstanding trade issues and enhancing cooperation between Canada and the United States.
