Veteran Progressive Conservative MLA Ron Schuler has announced he will not seek re-election, concluding a notable 27-year career in Manitoba’s legislature. Schuler, who represents the riding of Springfield-Ritchot, confirmed that he will continue to serve his constituents until the next election, scheduled for October 5, 2027.

During his tenure, Schuler held significant positions in cabinet, first as minister of Crown services under former Premier Brian Pallister and later as minister of infrastructure. In addition to these roles, he was active in opposition, taking on various critic positions, including those related to labour, immigration, and environment.

In a recent news release, Schuler expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the voters in East St. Paul, Niverville, Ritchot, Springfield, and West St. Paul for their support over the decades. He also thanked his children, Brigitta, Stefan, and Corina, for their unwavering love, noting his desire to spend more time with family and grandchildren in the future.

Schuler’s political journey began in 1999 when he was first elected. He successfully won re-election seven times, often with significant margins. His attempt at party leadership in 2006 saw him finish second to Hugh McFadyen, who led the party until 2012.

His cabinet roles were marked by notable responsibilities, including oversight of key Crown corporations such as Manitoba Hydro and Manitoba Public Insurance. In 2017, he transitioned to the role of infrastructure minister. However, he faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly regarding his vaccination status. Schuler’s decision to keep his vaccination status private led to his removal from cabinet by Premier Heather Stefanson in 2021. He argued that maintaining privacy on such matters is a civil liberty that should be respected.

While the next election date approaches, there are indications that Premier Wab Kinew may consider calling an early election. This follows announcements from other Tory MLAs, including Kelvin Goertzen and Doyle Piwniuk, who also confirmed they will not seek re-election.

As Schuler prepares for his final years in office, his long-standing service has left a notable mark on Manitoba politics, characterized by dedication to his constituents and impactful roles within the provincial government.
