A late-game surge propelled the Cincinnati Reds to a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on August 28, 2023. The Reds’ Noelvi Marte delivered a two-run single that secured the win after a rare lodged ball call cost the Blue Jays a potential tying run. This thrilling finish followed a ninth-inning collapse from the Cincinnati bullpen that had put the game in jeopardy.

Cincinnati started strong, leading 2-1, but the Blue Jays turned the tide with back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning. Bo Bichette, who finished with four hits, launched a two-run homer off Emilio Pagán, followed by Daulton Varsho’s solo shot, giving Toronto a fleeting 4-2 lead. The Reds’ pitching had faltered at a crucial moment, allowing the Blue Jays to capitalize on the opportunity.

With the game on the line in the bottom of the ninth, Cincinnati’s offense responded. Ke’Bryan Hayes ignited the rally with a single, followed by Matt McLain’s single that set the stage for the Reds’ comeback. After Brendon Little took the mound for Toronto, TJ Friedl’s double into the right-field corner allowed both Hayes and McLain to cross home plate.

A pivotal moment came when umpires ruled that the ball had lodged in a gap in the fence, permitting each runner to advance two bases. This rare occurrence led to McLain being sent back to third base, setting up Marte’s decisive at-bat. The young star then delivered a sharp single to left field, allowing McLain to score the tying run and Friedl to slide in safely ahead of Myles Straw’s throw.

Strong pitching from Hunter Greene had kept the Blue Jays at bay for much of the game. Greene allowed just three hits over six innings but faced challenges in the seventh, where Bichette’s double was followed by a single from Alejandro Kirk, narrowing Cincinnati’s lead. Greene’s ability to reach 100 mph on 21 pitches highlighted his potential as a formidable pitcher.

In a noteworthy moment for the Reds, Sal Stewart made his major league debut after being called up from Triple-A. The 21-year-old first baseman recorded a hit in three at-bats, contributing to the Reds’ offensive efforts, including scoring on Hayes’ two-run double.

The victory is significant for Cincinnati, keeping them within four games of the New York Mets for the final National League wild card spot. For Toronto, the loss reduced their lead in the American League East to 2.5 games over the idle New York Yankees, putting additional pressure on them as the season progresses.

Looking ahead, the Blue Jays will send right-hander José Berríos (9-5, 3.95 ERA) to the mound for the next game against Cincinnati. The Reds will counter with left-hander Nick Lodolo (8-7, 3.22 ERA) as they aim to build on this hard-fought win. The matchup promises to be an exciting continuation of the series between these two competitive teams.
