The Queen’s University Gaels will see the return of linebacker Justin Pace for their first-round playoff game against McMaster on September 30, 2023, at Richardson Stadium. Pace, an All-Canadian selection from the previous season, was previously suspended following his ejection during a game against Waterloo on September 20. The Gaels secured a decisive 58-18 victory in that match.

Pace was removed from the game for a hit on Warriors quarterback Nick Orr just before halftime. Following the incident, the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) did not disclose the specifics of his suspension. For weeks, the only communication from an OUA spokesperson indicated that Pace’s situation was “under review.”

This week, the OUA confirmed that Queen’s had formally appealed the suspension. According to OUA policies, a suspension was imposed for the remainder of the regular season. In a statement, Queen’s coach Steve Snyder indicated that Pace’s suspension has now concluded. “The suspension is now completed, so Justin will be returning to play this weekend,” Snyder stated during his weekly media briefing on Thursday.

Prior to the incident against Waterloo, Pace was the leading tackler for the Gaels. His absence was felt in the subsequent three games, including a convincing 57-5 victory over York on September 27, a 27-17 win against Guelph, and a close 31-28 loss at home to Windsor.

As the Gaels prepare for their playoff encounter against the Marauders, the return of Pace is expected to significantly bolster their defense. The team is eager to capitalize on his skills and experience as they aim for success in the postseason.
