Cranbrook Implements Stage 2 Watering Restrictions Amid Drought
In response to recent high temperatures, diminished rainfall, and a significant decline in water levels at Phillips Reservoir, the City of Cranbrook has announced the implementation of Stage 2 watering restrictions. These restrictions take effect at 12 p.m. on August 27.
Details of the Watering Restrictions
Under Stage 2 restrictions, residents are permitted to water their gardens only two days a week. Even-numbered addresses may water on Monday or Thursday, while odd-numbered addresses can do so on Tuesday and Friday. Watering is allowed only between the hours of 5 to 10 a.m. or 8 to 11 p.m., and not both, with a maximum watering duration of two hours.
These restrictions will remain in effect until further notice. Notably, residents may continue to water vegetable gardens, provided they use a handheld shut-off nozzle on their hoses. However, the use of water for washing windows, driveways, sidewalks, or similar surfaces is prohibited under these restrictions.
Impact on Local Parks and Greenspaces
According to Tony Hetu, Director of Public Works, the water level in Phillips Reservoir has dropped by four inches over the weekend and currently sits approximately 35 inches below full capacity. “Under these conditions, and following our Outdoor Water Use policy, we are moving to Stage 2 restrictions,” Hetu stated.
In addition to the watering restrictions for residents, city staff will begin reducing outdoor water use in priority two and three greenspaces around Cranbrook. This includes most parks and playgrounds, notably Lions Park, the Kinsmen Greenbelt, and the city cemetery. Essential irrigation levels will be maintained in key areas, including Rotary Park, Moir Park, the Kinsmen Quads, and Confederation ball parks, as well as the boulevard along Highway 3/95.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the watering restrictions and their implications in order to conserve water effectively during this period of reduced supply.
