Cameroon Opposition Leader Seeks Safety in Gambia Post-Election

In the wake of this contested election, opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary fled to Gambia for safety. Protests erupted in several cities following the announcement of the election results, including in the economic hub of Douala and northern cities like Maroua and Garoua. Official reports indicate that 16 individuals lost their lives during these demonstrations; however, opposition figures and human rights organizations estimate that the death toll exceeds 55.

Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982, is recognized as the world’s oldest president at 92 years old. His administration has faced criticism for a lack of transparency and accountability. Biya’s health has been a subject of speculation, as he frequently resides in Europe, delegating governance to party officials and family members.
