The political landscape in Cameroon has been shaken following the recent presidential election, which saw longtime leader Paul Biya secure an eighth term. In the wake of this contested election, opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary fled to Gambia for safety. His departure was prompted by violent protests in Cameroon, which resulted in numerous fatalities and significant unrest.

On November 7, 2023, Tchiroma arrived in Gambia, where the government confirmed it is hosting him on a humanitarian basis. The Gambia Ministry of Information stated that the decision aims to ensure Tchiroma’s safety amid escalating tensions in Cameroon. The Gambian authorities are also collaborating with regional partners, including Nigeria, to work towards a peaceful resolution of the situation.

Tchiroma, who has openly disputed the election results from October 12, claims to have emerged victorious and has urged the Cameroonian public to reject the official outcome. He faces potential legal action from the Cameroonian government, which has accused him of inciting insurrection through his statements.

Protests erupted in several cities following the announcement of the election results, including in the economic hub of Douala and northern cities like Maroua and Garoua. Official reports indicate that 16 individuals lost their lives during these demonstrations; however, opposition figures and human rights organizations estimate that the death toll exceeds 55.

Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982, is recognized as the world’s oldest president at 92 years old. His administration has faced criticism for a lack of transparency and accountability. Biya’s health has been a subject of speculation, as he frequently resides in Europe, delegating governance to party officials and family members.

While Gambia’s decision to host Tchiroma may provide him with temporary safety, the political situation in Cameroon remains volatile. The international community is closely monitoring developments, underscoring the need for dialogue and stability in the region.

This ongoing crisis highlights the challenges facing political opposition in Cameroon and raises critical questions about governance and human rights in the nation. As the situation unfolds, the hopes for a peaceful resolution hang in the balance.
