Senior Grace Tobias Earns Newman Central’s October Student Honor
Grace Tobias, a senior at Newman Central Catholic High School, has been recognized as the Student of the Month for October 2023. This accolade highlights her academic dedication and active involvement in the school community. Grace is the daughter of Kathryn and Jason Tobias and has a younger brother named Soren.
One of the courses that has significantly influenced Grace is English 101/103, taught by Mrs. Spencer. She describes the class as “rigorously engaging,” emphasizing the deep analysis of literary works. “The dissection of works we conduct, paired with strengthening my own writing through various techniques, has prompted my investment and inclusion time and time again,” she shared. This enthusiasm for learning reflects her commitment to academic excellence.
Looking ahead, Grace plans to attend a four-year university to major in psychology after graduation. While she awaits university admissions decisions, she is determined to pursue a master’s degree and eventually become a therapist. “I hope to obtain my master’s and eventually become a therapist,” she stated, expressing her aspiration to make a difference in people’s lives. Additionally, she aims to seek travel opportunities to enhance her understanding of the world.
Grace is also actively involved in community service, particularly through her work with the Penguin Project of the Sauk Valley. This program pairs mentors with children and young adults with special needs to produce a musical. “This program has taught me the importance of patience, kindness, and inclusivity while also inspiring countless individuals such as myself,” she remarked, highlighting the impact of her volunteer work.
In her school environment, Grace takes pride in her leadership role as a house captain of the Loretto House within the inaugural year of Newman’s John Henry Newman House System. Through this position, she engages with a quarter of the school on a daily basis, planning activities that foster camaraderie and unity. “The pride and unity that has been established is something I never expected to gain in my senior year, but it’s something I am so grateful for,” she noted.
Reflecting on her experiences, Grace recalled a particularly meaningful moment during the school’s last football game of the season, where her team faced a tough loss in the second round of playoffs. “Although we lost, all I could focus on was the love, support, and passion around me. Cheering on the sidelines, even in the pouring rain, helped me reflect on the strong support system I have,” she said, illustrating the emotional depth of her high school experience.
Looking towards the future, Grace hopes to continue spreading love and originality in her endeavors. “The future holds many uncertainties, but I can control myself and how I act toward others. Lifting others up through my words, actions, faith, and dedication is how I can hope to make an impact on the world,” she expressed. She emphasizes the importance of community support and aims to help others succeed in any way she can.
Grace Tobias’s recognition as Student of the Month not only honors her achievements but also underscores her commitment to personal growth and community engagement. With aspirations set high, she represents a bright example of leadership and dedication within the Newman Central Catholic High School community.
