The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), in collaboration with the Kimberley Fire Department, has initiated a prescribed burn in the Forest Crowne Estates West area beginning on September 18, 2023. This measure aims to mitigate wildfire risks for the Kimberley community and may result in visible smoke over the city, particularly in low-lying areas, for several days.

The burn will encompass approximately 12 hectares, situated between St. Mary’s Lake Road and the Forest Crowne Estates development. The primary objectives of this operation are to reduce the accumulation of dead wood and other combustible materials, hinder the growth of competing vegetation, and lower the potential for future catastrophic wildfires.

Controlled Conditions for Safety and Efficacy

BCWS emphasized that the burning will proceed only if conditions are favorable for achieving the desired outcomes and ensuring effective smoke dispersal. Although precautions will be taken, it is important to note that some unintended smoke impacts may occur in the aftermath of the burn.

“Fire is a normal and natural process in many of B.C.’s ecosystems,”

stated a BCWS representative. The organization regularly collaborates with land managers to conduct fuel management activities, including prescribed burns. These efforts aim to fulfill land management goals, reduce the severity of future wildfires, and enhance both ecosystem and wildfire resilience.

Community Engagement and Environmental Management

BCWS reassured community members that these projects are meticulously planned and executed during appropriate times and conditions to ensure the safety of both the community and practitioners. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the prescribed burn and its potential implications.
