Vimeo Boosts 3D Video Support for Apple Vision Pro Users

Vimeo has announced a significant upgrade to its support for 3D video, a move that could solidify its position as a competitive alternative to YouTube for users of the Apple Vision Pro headset. This enhancement is particularly relevant for owners of the newly released M5 model, who can now anticipate an increase in available 3D content.
One of the major highlights of this announcement is Vimeo’s integration of Apple Immersive Video support. This innovative format enables users to experience stereoscopic 8K video along with Spatial Audio through the headset’s speakers and compatible devices such as AirPods Pro. Currently, the Apple Immersive Video feature is limited to content accessed via the Apple TV app, making Vimeo’s support a noteworthy development in the 3D video landscape.
Vimeo also disclosed its plans to incorporate support for VR180, a widely recognized standard for 3D video that allows for a 180-degree field of vision. This format enhances the viewing experience by offering a broader perspective, enabling viewers to engage more fully with the content.
In addition, Vimeo introduced support for the Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP), a format first revealed during Apple’s WWDC 2025 event. Unlike VR180, APMP accommodates both 180-degree and 360-degree video, as well as Wide Field of View (FOV) video. This file format specifies encoding and decoding methods, along with camera specifications, enabling creators to produce high-quality content. As noted by 9to5Mac, the APMP support will facilitate creators in utilizing Blackmagic cameras, editing in Final Cut Pro, and distributing their work directly through Vimeo.
Vimeo also unveiled a suite of new features, including an AI-powered search function, enhancing user experience further. Historically, while 3D video has been a key selling point for the Apple Vision Pro, content availability has been sparse. This latest announcement could change that dynamic, potentially setting Vimeo apart from its competition.
YouTube, Vimeo’s primary rival, has yet to embrace Apple’s foray into the 3D space, leaving an opportunity for Vimeo to establish itself as the go-to platform for 3D content creators and viewers alike. While Apple has taken steps to fill the content gap, including a recent addition of seven new Apple Immersive films to the Apple TV app—featuring events like MotoGP races, BBC Proms, and a documentary on Australia’s Eastern Kuku Yalanji people—Vimeo’s proactive approach may resonate with audiences seeking diverse 3D content.
As the landscape of 3D video continues to evolve, Vimeo’s commitment to enhancing its platform with support for Apple-specific features positions it favorably in the competitive digital content market.
