Innovative Wearable WATI Helps Users Navigate Urban Heat Safely

Urban environments are increasingly facing challenges due to rising temperatures, making it crucial for residents to find safe ways to navigate their cities. The innovative wearable concept known as WATI aims to address this issue by providing real-time heat navigation for runners, commuters, and anyone active outdoors. Developed as a next-generation ambient temperature indicator, WATI combines environmental awareness with practical features tailored for everyday life.
At the core of WATI’s functionality is its ability to guide users through urban heat. By integrating a companion app, WATI generates ‘cool routes’ for walking, running, or commuting. These routes are crafted using a combination of multiple data sources, including hyperlocal heat maps from Meteoblue, thermal satellite imagery from Constellr and SatVu, as well as crowdsourced data from other WATI users. This unique approach allows the device to recommend paths that prioritize safety in terms of temperature and sun exposure, rather than simply the fastest or shortest routes.
Design and Functionality of WATI
Designed by Iana Nikolova, WATI features a circular touchscreen that balances aesthetics and usability. Its interface draws inspiration from minimalist weather graphics, coupled with the robust, data-centric design reminiscent of classic IBM mainframes. The device is encased in a plant-based resin that reflects UV rays, merging sustainability with enhanced sun protection.
WATI boasts an impressive battery life of up to 10 hours, making it well-suited for extended outings in the city. Its dual-attachment system offers flexibility, allowing users to wear it in various ways—clipped to clothing, attached to bags, or as a smartwatch. This adaptable design ensures that WATI fits seamlessly into users’ daily routines.
Real-time alerts are a standout feature of WATI, setting it apart from typical wearables. It can notify users about current UV exposure levels, identify nearby hydration points, highlight shaded areas, and even issue warnings regarding Urban Heat Island effects. This functionality is particularly beneficial for runners, elderly individuals, and those particularly sensitive to heat.
Community-Driven Data and User Empowerment
The companion app accompanying WATI enhances the user experience by visualizing data in an accessible manner. It fosters a community-driven atmosphere, showcasing achievements, heat analytics, and contributions from fellow WATI users in real time.
By making heat conditions visible, personal, and actionable, WATI empowers individuals to make informed decisions as they navigate their urban environments. Instead of merely reacting to weather changes, users can proactively plan their routes, hydration, and activities, thereby improving their overall outdoor experience.
WATI remains in development, but its concept serves as a timely solution for a warming world. As cities heat up due to climate change and the Urban Heat Island effect, tools like WATI could prove essential in helping individuals safely and confidently traverse their surroundings.
