Canadians Demand AI Regulation, Poll Reveals Strong Majority Support

A recent poll conducted by Leger shows that a substantial majority of Canadians are in favor of regulating artificial intelligence (AI). The survey found that **85%** of respondents believe that government intervention is necessary to ensure the ethical and safe use of AI technologies. Among those surveyed, more than half, **57%**, indicated that they strongly support this regulation.
The online survey, which included **1,518** participants between **August 22 and August 25, 2025**, highlights a growing concern among Canadians regarding the implications of AI in everyday life. While the poll reveals a clear desire for regulatory measures, it also notes a significant increase in AI usage. Since **March 2025**, the number of Canadians using AI tools has risen by **10%**, with **57%** of respondents confirming their engagement with such technologies.
Government Stance on AI Regulation
Despite the public’s strong call for regulation, Canada’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence has stated a shift in focus. The minister has emphasized reducing the emphasis on AI regulation, aligning with a broader global trend where governments prioritize the adoption of AI technologies over governance and safety measures. This approach could potentially create a disconnect between the government’s strategy and the public’s demand for oversight.
The Canadian Research Insights Council, the body representing the polling industry, noted that online surveys like this one cannot be assigned a margin of error, as they do not randomly sample the entire population. This limitation is important to consider when interpreting the results.
The concerns raised by Canadians about AI include potential threats to employment and ethical considerations regarding its deployment. As AI continues to become more integrated into various sectors, the demand for oversight and governance is likely to remain a pressing issue.
This report by **The Canadian Press**, authored by **Anja Karadeglija**, was originally published on **August 27, 2025**. The findings underscore the need for a balanced approach that addresses both the benefits and risks associated with artificial intelligence in society.
