Activision Faces Backlash Over AI Art in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7
The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has sparked controversy as accusations emerge against Activision for allegedly utilizing AI-generated art for in-game calling cards. While the company has not explicitly confirmed the use of AI tools for creating the artwork, it has acknowledged that AI technology is employed for certain development assets.
The concerns were highlighted by a user on the platform X, known as Kume, just before the game’s official launch. The post pointed out that some calling cards, earned through campaign and endgame achievements, appeared to be the product of AI art. This situation follows a similar controversy earlier in the year when Activision admitted to using generative AI art for a loading screen featuring a zombie Santa in Black Ops 6.
Activision’s choice to incorporate AI tools in its creative process has drawn ire from the gaming community. Critics argue that AI-generated art undermines the work of human artists, as these tools often rely on existing art for inspiration. Many in the community express concern that leveraging AI for game assets could diminish opportunities for artists who could otherwise contribute to the franchise.
Widespread Speculation About AI Art Usage
The allegations extend beyond just the campaign and endgame calling cards. There are suspicions that calling cards from multiplayer and zombie modes may also feature AI-generated designs. Identifying AI art can be challenging for those not familiar with its distinctive styles. However, enthusiasts claim that once familiar with the traits of AI artwork, it becomes easier to recognize.
Tools such as Grok, ChatGPT, and Sora have gained notoriety for their unique artistic outputs, with ChatGPT even gaining attention for reproducing the iconic Studio Ghibli art style. Some calling cards in Black Ops 7 appear to mimic this recognizable style, further fueling speculation about AI involvement in their creation.
In addition to the calling cards, reports suggest that Activision may be employing AI-generated art for other elements of the game, including icons associated with the prestige system. Additionally, it has been noted that some calling cards appear to be reused from previous titles in the franchise, with only minor alterations such as name changes.
The implications of these developments may not significantly impact the overall success of Black Ops 7, but they have certainly raised questions about the artistic integrity of the franchise.
