Strong Earthquake in Eastern Afghanistan Claims Over 250 Lives

A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday, leading to the tragic loss of at least 250 lives and leaving more than 500 people injured. The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 6.0, occurred at 23:47 local time and was centered approximately 27 kilometers (17 miles) east-northeast of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province. The U.S. Geological Survey noted that the quake was shallow, occurring at a depth of just 8 kilometers (5 miles), which typically increases the potential for damage.
The Kunar Disaster Management Authority reported that the affected areas include the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapadare. Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency services work to reach remote communities that have been severely impacted by this natural disaster.
The earthquake’s devastation has prompted concerns about the overall humanitarian situation in the region, where infrastructure is often vulnerable. Many survivors are in urgent need of medical assistance and basic supplies. Local authorities are assessing the extent of the damage, and international aid organizations are being mobilized to assist in recovery efforts.
As the situation develops, officials urge those in affected areas to stay alert and follow safety protocols. The frequency of earthquakes in Afghanistan, particularly in the eastern regions bordering Pakistan, highlights the need for ongoing preparedness and response strategies to mitigate the impact of such disasters in the future.
This devastating event serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by communities in seismically active zones and underscores the importance of international cooperation in disaster response and recovery. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
