Nobel Laureate Michael Houghton Launches Life Sciences Week in Edmonton

Life Sciences Week is set to commence on September 24, 2023, in Edmonton and Calgary, featuring a robust schedule of events aimed at highlighting the province’s growing significance in Canadian innovation. With over 5,000 attendees expected from across Canada and beyond, the event promises to be a major gathering for the life sciences community.
The opening day in Edmonton will include a prominent discussion featuring Sir Michael Houghton, Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine and Chief Scientific Officer of Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API). This session will be hosted by Digital Journal, the official media partner for Life Sciences Week, with Chris Hogg, CEO and executive editor of Digital Journal, leading the conversation. The event will take place at 9 a.m. on the main stage at Edmonton Unlimited.
Exploring Innovations in Biotech
Sir Michael Houghton is globally recognized for his pivotal role in the co-discovery of the hepatitis C virus, a breakthrough that revolutionized blood safety and patient care worldwide. His research led to the development of screening tests that significantly reduced the risk of transmission through transfusions, paving the way for therapies that effectively cure the infection in most treated patients.
His experience provides valuable insights into how scientific discoveries can translate into impactful health solutions. Houghton emphasizes the importance of fostering an environment conducive to commercialization to ensure that Canadian research yields similar transformative results in the future.
Before settling in Canada, Houghton observed the emergence of major biotech clusters in both the United Kingdom and California. His extensive background allows him to share unique perspectives on nurturing life sciences ecosystems, highlighting the essential mix of talent, investment, and infrastructure necessary to transition early research into successful enterprises. In Edmonton, he collaborates to create an environment where Canadian innovations can thrive on a global scale.
Alberta’s Growing Life Sciences Sector
Edmonton is home to the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute, which Houghton directs. The institute focuses on applied research aimed at accelerating the commercialization of discoveries, aligning with a broader trend in Alberta’s life sciences ecosystem towards enhancing translational capacity.
Currently, Alberta’s life sciences sector contributes over $4.7 billion to the provincial GDP and supports more than 34,000 full-time equivalent jobs. The Edmonton-Calgary corridor is rapidly emerging as a key region for life sciences growth in Canada. The sector has witnessed increasing research and development spending, the emergence of new companies, and significant investments, including Entos Pharmaceuticals’ recent announcement of a $198.5 million biomanufacturing facility in Edmonton.
During the conversation with Hogg, Houghton will discuss how Alberta’s evolving capacity positions the province to address commercialization gaps and enhance Canada’s biomanufacturing strategy.
Canada’s life sciences sector operates on a global stage, with international competition and collaboration. Despite producing highly regarded research across multiple disciplines, many Canadian discoveries struggle to scale commercially. Experts often attribute this gap to limited investment, infrastructure, and support systems.
Policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs are interrogating what it will take to bridge this divide, making Houghton’s insights particularly relevant. His experience in translating discoveries into global health practices offers a vital perspective on how Canada can better align its scientific endeavors with investment and infrastructure to enhance the success rates of its innovations.
The discussion with Sir Michael Houghton and Chris Hogg will take place in person at Edmonton Unlimited on September 24, 2023, at 9 a.m. To register for this complimentary event, interested individuals can visit the Life Sciences Week agenda for details.
