A gathering organized by Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin (RHW) this weekend will focus on academic discussions surrounding the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO), amid accusations of promoting a “hate rally.” RHW, representing the 21 First Nations of the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850, aims to clarify misconceptions and foster constructive dialogue about the legal and historical claims of the Métis in Ontario.

Clarifying the Purpose of the Gathering

In response to a letter from Kim Powley labeling the event as a “hate rally,” RHW emphasized that their gathering, titled “The (Un)Making of Métis Claims in Ontario,” is intended as an academic forum. The event will feature presentations from approximately 20 independent scholars and community leaders who will share their research on the Métis community and its claims across Anishinaabe territories.

RHW stated, “Nothing could be further from the truth” regarding the claims of hate. They stressed that their mission is to educate others about their inherent rights, governance, and territory, as granted by Gichi Manidoo. The organization aims to protect their history and jurisdiction while addressing the MNO’s recognition and expansion of claims.

Invitation to Participate in Constructive Dialogue

The gathering will include elders, students, and community members, providing a platform for shared knowledge and discussion. RHW hopes to engage all participants in conversations grounded in respect and truth, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over division. Registration for the event is open, allowing both in-person and online participation.

With the MNO receiving substantial funding annually, RHW believes it is vital to present an alternative perspective on the 2017 recognition of new Métis communities. They argue that the research and findings shared during this forum will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the complex historical and political issues at play.

As RHW prepares for this significant gathering, they invite anyone interested in the topic to join the discussion. For details on registration and participation, individuals can visit the forum’s official website.
