AI Apps Combat Loneliness by Connecting Strangers in Real Life

In an effort to tackle rising loneliness, innovative AI-powered apps are facilitating social connections among strangers. One such platform, named 222, enables users to meet new people through carefully curated social events. During a recent evening in San Francisco, 25-year-old paramedic JT Mason enjoyed dinner with five unfamiliar faces, buoyed by the app’s promise of authentic interactions.
Before attending the dinner, Mason completed an extensive questionnaire that assessed his values, interests, and personality traits. This data helps the app create more compatible matches. After the meal, participants moved to a private art deco bar, where they could further engage with fellow users, aiming to forge friendships or possibly something deeper. Following the event, users provide feedback on their experiences, allowing the app’s artificial intelligence to refine its matching capabilities over time.
Keyan Kazemian, the 26-year-old co-founder of 222, emphasizes the importance of meaningful connections. After his tenure at Match Group, the parent company of Tinder and Hinge, Kazemian noticed a gap in the market. He stated that traditional dating apps focus primarily on superficial swiping, lacking depth in fostering genuine relationships. “Most new technologies are actually placing people not with other humans, but with virtual entities,” he remarked, reflecting on the limitations of social media and AI assistants.
Addressing the Loneliness Epidemic
The growing concern over loneliness has captured the attention of health professionals. In a 2017 report, then US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy described a significant “loneliness epidemic.” By 2023, he highlighted that the health risks associated with social disconnection can be likened to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, surpassing the dangers linked to obesity and sedentary lifestyles. These risks include increased chances of cardiovascular diseases, dementia, and depression.
Studies attribute the rise in loneliness to the decline of traditional social institutions, the addictive nature of digital platforms, and the societal shifts brought on by the pandemic and remote work trends.
Innovative Solutions for Social Connections
New York resident Isabella Epstein experienced the challenges of forming connections firsthand after relocating for work in 2021. Coming from a close-knit community in rural Vermont, she struggled to find her footing in a bustling city. Epstein tried various methods to meet new people, including social clubs and apps, but found little success. “It was an emotionally challenging period for me,” she recalled.
Determined to create a network, she began engaging strangers with compliments or questions in public spaces. This approach eventually led her to establish hundreds of contacts and organize casual gatherings, ranging from happy hours to pickleball games. Motivated by her experiences, Epstein left her job to launch “Kndrd,” an app designed specifically for New York women under 40. The platform allows users to suggest activities and find partners, effectively streamlining the process of building friendships.
Other apps, such as Timeleft, Plots, and Realroots, have emerged alongside 222 and Kndrd, each aiming to facilitate real-world connections. Felix-Olivier Ngangue, an investor at Convivialite Ventures, notes the unique business model of these platforms: “Their business model doesn’t rely on time spent online; it’s in their interest for people to meet in real life.”
As society grapples with the implications of social isolation, these AI-driven solutions offer a promising avenue for fostering genuine human connections, addressing a growing need in an increasingly digital world.
