Toronto’s Sankofa Square Celebrates First Sankofa Day with Unity

Toronto’s public space known as Sankofa Square, formerly Yonge-Dundas Square, hosted its inaugural Sankofa Day on August 23, 2023. This day commemorates the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The renaming of the square is part of a broader initiative by the city to replace public assets associated with Henry Dundas, a Scottish politician who significantly delayed the abolition of slavery in Britain.
Organizers describe Sankofa Day as an opportunity to reflect on the past and inspire a united future. According to Emmanuel Duodu, President of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario, the event serves not only the African diaspora but also the broader community. “We want to look back and build forward with confidence and unity,” Duodu stated. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging past injustices while fostering communal growth and cohesion.
Honoring Diverse Communities
The day’s events featured cultural displays, speeches, and performances that paid tribute to both the African diaspora and the Indigenous community. Ashley McKenzie-Barnes, the event curator, articulated the significance of reintroducing the square as a vibrant, inclusive space. Following a public research study last year, feedback indicated a desire for more diverse programming, including wellness activities, sports, and artistic expressions.
“They said they wanted more film, more free programming, and more colour,” McKenzie-Barnes noted. “We are exploring the future of this square through community input.” She highlighted that the celebrations would demonstrate what a decolonized space looks like, ensuring programming appeals to all age groups.
Moreover, McKenzie-Barnes recognized that the transition to the name Sankofa Square might take time. Yet, she is optimistic that Sankofa Day will encourage residents to view the square as more than just a venue. “We want people to see this space as something vibrant and cultured,” she added.
A Step Towards Inclusivity
The inaugural Sankofa Day is a significant milestone in Toronto’s ongoing journey towards inclusivity and cultural acknowledgment. Events like this not only commemorate historical events but also aim to foster reconciliation and understanding among diverse communities. By celebrating Sankofa Day, Toronto is taking meaningful steps to acknowledge its past while actively shaping a more inclusive future.
As the city continues to evolve, initiatives like these reflect a commitment to learning from history and creating a welcoming environment for all its residents. The celebration of Sankofa Day in Sankofa Square marks a new chapter in Toronto’s narrative, one that emphasizes unity, cultural richness, and shared growth.
