Thousands gathered in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 14, 2023, to participate in the annual Terry Fox Run, commemorating the legacy of a remarkable Canadian hero. This year marked the 45th anniversary of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope, drawing participants of all ages to the waterfront for a five-kilometre run that began near the iconic Terry Fox statue on Dallas Road.

Terry Fox, diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer at the age of 18, became a national symbol of perseverance and hope. After losing a leg to the disease, Fox embarked on his legendary Marathon of Hope in April 1980, aiming to run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Over 143 days, he ran nearly 42 kilometres daily, starting from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and covering vast distances until his journey was cut short in Ontario when the cancer spread to his lungs. Tragically, Fox passed away in June 1981 at just 22 years old.

Since his passing, the Terry Fox Run has been held every fall nationwide, encouraging communities to come together in support of cancer research. This year’s event in Victoria exceeded expectations, with early estimates indicating that participants, along with a hair-cutting initiative, raised approximately $120,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. The initial fundraising goal was set at $75,000, but contributions continued to flow, with online totals surpassing $101,000 as more donations were still being processed.

The atmosphere during the event was vibrant as families, friends, and supporters joined in unity to celebrate Fox’s enduring legacy. Many wore shirts bearing his name and the iconic image of his silhouette, while others sported new haircuts from local barber shops offering their services for the cause. The sense of community was palpable as runners and walkers alike traversed the scenic route, demonstrating their commitment to ending cancer and honoring the spirit of Terry Fox.

In Victoria and beyond, the Terry Fox Run serves not only as a tribute to a young man’s dream but also as a powerful reminder of the collective effort needed to combat cancer. The ongoing commitment to fundraising efforts continues to inspire hope and foster research advancements that benefit countless individuals affected by the disease.
