The Swedish royal family has arrived in Ottawa today, commencing a three-day state visit that includes key meetings with Canadian officials and a delegation of top government ministers. This marks the royal family’s first visit to Canada since 2006, with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia leading the delegation, which also features representatives from numerous Swedish companies.

Official Welcome and Ceremonial Events

Upon their arrival, the royal couple will be officially welcomed at Rideau Hall by a Canadian delegation, including Chief Justice Richard Wagner. This morning’s ceremonies will include a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, underscoring the significance of the visit.

This afternoon, the King and Queen are scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney and other government officials on Parliament Hill. These discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in areas such as trade and cultural exchange.

Support for Ukraine and State Dinner

A notable highlight of the visit will be an event where Canada and Sweden reaffirm their support for Ukraine. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand will engage in discussions with Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch and representatives from the Ukrainian-Canadian community. This gathering reflects both nations’ commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst ongoing challenges.

The visit will culminate in a state dinner held in honor of the King and Queen at the Governor General’s residence this evening, further enhancing ties between the two countries. This historic visit is seen as an opportunity to celebrate the longstanding friendship between Canada and Sweden.
