The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, located in Waterloo, will honour its founder, Mike Lazaridis, during a special gala event on the evening of October 5, 2023. This celebration coincides with the institute’s 25th anniversary, recognising Lazaridis’ significant contributions to both technology and science.

Lazaridis, known for revolutionizing communication with the Blackberry, has redirected his focus toward the mysteries of the universe. His philanthropic efforts established the Perimeter Institute, with an initial donation of $100 million, which at that time was the largest single contribution to Canadian science. Mark Healy, the Director of Communications & Public Engagement at the institute, emphasized the importance of Lazaridis’ return for this milestone celebration.

Honouring a Visionary

Healy remarked, “It’s really important that we have Mike back to say thank-you, and to acknowledge the tremendous impact that he’s had, not just on Perimeter, but on this region, on Quantum Valley, and across Canada.” The legacy of Lazaridis extends beyond the Perimeter Institute, as he also contributed to the establishment of the Institute for Quantum Computing, further solidifying Canada’s position in the global quantum landscape.

According to Healy, there is a well-known story about how Lazaridis recognized that the various components of the Blackberry were influenced by breakthroughs in physics. This understanding motivated him to give back to the scientific community. Healy stated that 25 years later, the advancements Canada has made in quantum technologies can be traced back to Lazaridis’ initial investment in scientific research.

A Lasting Impact on Quantum Science

As the Founding Chair Emeritus of the Perimeter Institute, Lazaridis’ vision continues to inspire researchers and students alike. The gala event will not only celebrate his contributions but also serve as a reminder of the profound connection between technology and theoretical physics. By bridging these fields, Lazaridis has played a crucial role in nurturing a vibrant scientific community in Canada.

As the Perimeter Institute looks to the future, the institute remains committed to fostering innovation in theoretical physics, a mission that Lazaridis helped to establish. His legacy is not just one of financial support but also of inspiring a new generation of scientists dedicated to exploring the fundamental questions of the universe.
