A new charitable initiative, Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay, is set to officially launch on December 11, 2023, with the aim of supporting disadvantaged youth in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The organization will provide free refurbished guitars and music lessons to children in need, fostering their musical talents and self-expression.

The initiative stems from a conversation between Brooke Pilley, president of Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay, and Dan Walsh, one of the founders of the original Guitars for Kids organization based in Waterloo. Pilley’s interest in charitable work and music led him to connect with Walsh, who generously supported the establishment of the local branch by sending a starter pack of 25 guitars.

Pilley expressed the emotional power of music, stating, “I think if you ask anyone who loves music, especially a guitarist or somebody who plays any instrument… at some point in their life, it got them through some tough times.” He emphasized that even if a child does not pursue music professionally, the initiative will show them that the community cares and wants to provide opportunities.

Community Support and Local Partnerships

To ensure the guitars are in good condition, Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay collaborates with local luthiers, including Perry Chan, owner of Monkey Guitars. Chan assesses donated instruments, repairing those that need it and converting irreparable guitars into art projects. He noted, “Nothing’s wasted,” and described how most donated guitars are generally in decent condition, with electric guitars being particularly resilient.

The organization’s board secretary, Curt Mill, highlighted the positive impact of music on mental health and community involvement, stating, “I see the positivity of having people learn to play music.” His experience working with underprivileged youth reinforces the importance of providing creative outlets for self-expression.

As Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay prepares for its official launch, a special event titled “Shred the North” will showcase local talent. The event will feature a competition among 16 talented guitarists of all ages and genres, with the local band Brazen Bull set to close the show. Pilley hopes the event will inspire children to explore music and see the talent within their community.

Future Programs and Community Engagement

Looking ahead, Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay plans to distribute guitars and commence lessons in early 2024. By spring, the organization aims to introduce additional programming, including songwriting sessions, jam nights, and band camps, providing further opportunities for young musicians to develop their skills.

Pilley emphasized the organization’s motto, “playing it forward,” which encapsulates the mission to empower the next generation. He encouraged individuals with the means and expertise to contribute, stating, “We hope that people can help pay it forward to the next generation by providing them with opportunities to learn music, express themselves creatively, and hopefully get through some tough times.”

In the meantime, the organization is actively seeking guitar donations. Interested individuals can drop off instruments at Music World on Simpson Street or arrange for pickup by contacting Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay directly. The initiative promises to create a nurturing environment for young talent, ultimately enriching the community through music.
