A lawyer from Nanaimo and Ladysmith, Martin Bühler, has been awarded the esteemed King’s Counsel designation by the B.C. Ministry of the Attorney General for 2025. This honor is bestowed upon lawyers who have made significant contributions to the legal profession, enhancing both its functionality and public perception.

The King’s Counsel title recognizes the achievements of 31 lawyers this year, highlighting their commitment to the legal system. Bühler, a member of the Simpcw First Nation, specializes in wills and estates, commercial law, and property disputes. His legal practice has earned him respect and recognition within the legal community.

Professional Contributions and Leadership Roles

Bühler has been an active member of the Canadian Bar Association of B.C. and the Aboriginal Lawyers Forum since 2021. He has held various positions, including vice-chairperson and provincial council representative. In 2025, he advanced to the role of co-chairperson of the Aboriginal Lawyers Forum and serves as its representative on the board of directors of the bar association.

His engagement extends to other organizations as well. Bühler is also a member of the Indigenous Bar Association and the Nanaimo County Bar Association. Previously, he was associated with the Advocates’ Club, a group for litigators based in Vancouver. These roles reflect his dedication to promoting inclusivity and representation within the legal profession.

The designation of King’s Counsel allows recipients to add “KC” after their names, a mark of respect that signifies their peers’ recognition of their contributions. Nomination for this honor is based on recommendations from fellow legal professionals, underscoring the trust and esteem Bühler has garnered in his career.

Bühler’s achievements not only illustrate his personal commitment to the legal field but also highlight the broader efforts of Indigenous lawyers to influence and shape legal practices in British Columbia. His work exemplifies the ongoing evolution of the legal system, aimed at improving access and representation for diverse communities.

As the legal landscape continues to transform, honors like the King’s Counsel designation serve to inspire current and future generations of lawyers, particularly within underrepresented groups. Bühler’s recognition stands as a testament to the importance of dedication, leadership, and professional integrity in the pursuit of justice and equity within the legal system.
