Local Volunteers Transform Pear Harvest into Food Bank Donation
A group of dedicated volunteers recently gathered to harvest pears from a local Bartlett pear tree, donating the fruit to a nearby food bank. This effort, organized by Sources, showcased the community’s spirit and commitment to helping those in need.
Community Spirit on Display
On one of the hotter days of the summer, the volunteers arrived ready to work. Among them were a mother and daughter team, four other women, including a remarkable 81-year-old, and a senior gentleman. Contrary to expectations of heavyset individuals ready to climb ladders, this diverse group demonstrated that teamwork and skill are key to effective gleaning.
The volunteers managed to collect both ripe and slightly unripe pears from the tree, ensuring that as much fruit as possible was saved from going to waste. Their efforts not only provided fresh produce for those in need but also highlighted the importance of community involvement in local food security initiatives.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Sally Stewart, the tree’s owner, expressed her gratitude towards the volunteers and the organization. “What a wonderful group of human beings, and a huge thank you to Sources,” she remarked. This collaborative effort exemplifies the impact that local initiatives can have on addressing food insecurity.
The act of gleaning, which involves collecting surplus produce from farms, orchards, and gardens, plays a crucial role in supporting food banks. By repurposing excess fruit, volunteers like those from Sources not only help reduce waste but also provide essential nutrition to community members who may struggle to access fresh food.
As communities continue to face challenges related to food access, initiatives like this serve as a reminder of the positive changes that can occur when individuals come together for a common cause. The pear harvest was not just a simple gathering; it represented hope and support for many in the area.
