Lilley’s Beanies of Bravery Inspires Community to Support Childhood Cancer Awareness

A heartwarming initiative, Lilley’s Beanies of Bravery, is mobilizing the Vernon Hills community to support children undergoing cancer treatment. Seven-year-old Lilley Sloniker, who is currently battling leukemia, has inspired a campaign to provide beanies for young patients at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. After losing her hair during treatment, Lilley found solace in wearing hats, which she described as “armor” that brings comfort and confidence.
Lilley’s parents, Chriselle and Michael Sloniker, shared their daughter’s journey on Instagram under the handle @lifewithlilley. They highlighted the emotional significance of beanies, stating, “Each beanie carries with it a message. You are seen. You are loved. You are not alone.” The campaign began when Lilley observed that the “hat shelf” for pediatric patients was often empty, leaving many children without the comfort of a beanie. Determined to make a change, Lilley expressed her desire to fill the shelves.
Community Rallies for a Cause
With the help of family, friends, and neighbors, Lilley donated over 300 beanies last year. This year, her ambition has grown; she aims to collect 700 beanies—one for each year of her life. As of now, Lilley has already gathered more than 650 beanies. To facilitate this effort, a special event titled Lilley’s Beanies of Bravery Family Event is scheduled for September 28, 2023, from 14:00 to 17:00 at Deerpath Park, located at 24 Warrington Road.
The event promises a day filled with engaging activities, including balloon art, giant bubbles, face painting, and a magic show. Local heroes from the police and fire departments will provide emergency vehicle tours, and there will be opportunities for arts and crafts and lawn games. The Vernon Hills Police Department, which made Lilley an honorary junior officer last year, played a key role in organizing the event, along with local businesses and families who contributed their time and resources.
Chriselle expressed her gratitude, saying, “It’s beautiful to see so many people come together for this. We’re just so grateful for everyone supporting this.” Lilley, now in the second grade at Hawthorn Elementary School, is enthusiastic about her mission, stating, “It makes me feel happy.” Her Girl Scout troop plans to assist with cleanup after the event, highlighting the community’s involvement.
A Journey of Resilience
The Slonikers aim to raise awareness about childhood cancer during September, recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Lilley’s treatment is ongoing, expected to continue until at least July 2026. The family hopes that through Lilley’s Beanies of Bravery, they can bring attention to the challenges faced by young patients and show appreciation for the support they have received.
The journey has not been without its challenges. Initially, when Lilley began losing her hair, she felt self-conscious and would not go outside without a hat. Chriselle reflected on the emotional toll of their experience, stating, “We lived in a world of hospital rooms, sleepless nights and a silence so heavy it felt like we were disappearing inside it.” The family faced a further setback when Michael suffered a heart attack on Christmas Day, an event that deepened their struggles.
Despite the adversity, the Slonikers have chosen to focus on gratitude and compassion. Chriselle emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “Instead of fear, anger and despair, we choose to focus on gratitude and compassion.” The upcoming event not only aims to collect beanies but also serves as a testament to the resilience of Lilley and her family, showcasing the power of community in times of crisis.
As Lilley continues her treatment, her determination to help others shines brightly, inspiring both her community and those who follow her journey.
