The community of Fernie, British Columbia, is mourning the loss of Donald “Don” Harrad, who passed away on February 1, 2026, at the age of eighty-nine. He died at the Elk Valley Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by family members who cherished his presence.

A Life Well-Lived

Born on May 2, 1936, to Ivy and Albert Harrad, Don spent his formative years on a small farm in Cokato. His heartfelt marriage to Ida Corrigan began on July 2, 1960, a union that lasted until her passing on October 3, 2012. Together, they built a life filled with love and memories, which Don held dear.

Don’s professional journey included significant roles at the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company and the MF&M shops as a machinist. Later, he transferred to the Elko Sawmill, where he dedicated many years of service until his retirement. His work ethic and commitment to his profession were evident to all who knew him.

A Passion for Family and Community

Beyond his work, Don enjoyed various outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and huckleberry picking. He was also an avid supporter of the Toronto Blue Jays, often seen cheering for his team. A lifelong member of the Fernie Elks Lodge and the Fernie Legion, Don’s community involvement reflected his dedication to those around him.

Don is predeceased by many family members, including his beloved wife, Ida, his brother Art, and several in-laws. He leaves behind a legacy through his children, Donald Harrad, Shauna Stimpson (Brian), and Marlo Harrad (Steve Cawdell). His grandchildren, Casey (Dean), Amanda, Chris Cawdell, Zack, and Logan Stimpson, along with his great-granddaughters Izabella, Oriah, Brynleigh, and Haven, carry forward his spirit and affection.

Family was at the heart of Don’s life. He treasured every gathering and cherished moments spent with loved ones. As his family reflects on his life, they express their deep love and admiration, stating, “We love you, Dad, and will miss you. May you forever fly with the angels.”

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Don’s name to Agnes Fuchs, coordinator of the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children, at 100-2629 29th Ave, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4S 2N9. This gesture honors Don’s commitment to community and the values he upheld throughout his life.

Don Harrad’s passing marks the end of an era for his family, friends, and the Fernie community. His legacy of love, hard work, and community spirit will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
