Chelsea, Quebec Adopts ‘Chelsiens’ as New Demonym for Residents

Residents of Chelsea, Quebec, have a new identity as the municipality officially adopts the demonym “Chelsiens.” This announcement was made during a special council meeting on March 4, 2024, where community engagement was emphasized as a key element in the process.
Mayor Pierre Guénard expressed his gratitude on social media, stating, “A demonym is more than just a word: it’s a citizen-led expression, born from the community, that strengthens our sense of belonging and connects future generations.” The new identity was celebrated with signage stating, “I am Chelsien,” marking a significant milestone for the town as it commemorates its 150th anniversary.
Seeking a distinctive name to represent its residents, the municipality invited suggestions from the community. The selected demonym had to be “well pronounced in both official languages” and “gender-inclusive or gender-neutral,” aligning with the town’s demographic diversity. According to the 2021 Census, approximately 47.8 percent of Chelsea’s residents speak English as their first language, illustrating the bilingual nature of the community.
Prior to the official announcement, submissions were submitted to Quebec’s body responsible for managing place names, ensuring compliance with linguistic standards. Other proposed names included “Chelsois,” “Chelski,” and “Chelseacois.” Ultimately, the council approved “Chelsiens” as the name that best encapsulated the spirit of the community.
Chelsea’s decision to adopt a new demonym reflects a growing trend in municipalities across Canada, where local identities are increasingly recognized and celebrated. For instance, residents of Ottawa are known as Ottawans, further embedding a sense of local pride and community among residents.
As Chelsea moves forward with its new identity, the community looks to strengthen bonds among its residents and enrich future generations’ connection to their town. This initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of local engagement in shaping community identity.
