Celebrating Milestones in Local Sports History on October 15

As October 15, 2025, arrives, local sports enthusiasts reflect on significant milestones in the history of sports within the community. Notable achievements spanning five decades highlight the rich athletic culture in the region, showcasing both emerging talent and established teams.
Historic Achievements in Local Bowling
Fifty years ago, the local bowling scene celebrated a remarkable achievement when Carrie Cumming, then just 13 years old, scored a high single of 210 in 10-pin bowling. This impressive performance marked a significant milestone for young female bowlers in the area, inspiring future generations to pursue the sport.
Key Trades and Victories in Hockey
Forty years ago, the Brandon Wheat Kings made headlines by acquiring right-winger Rod Williams from the New Westminster Bruins. This strategic move aimed to strengthen the team as they prepared for a competitive season in the Western Hockey League.
Fast forward to thirty years ago, the Wheat Kings continued their successful run as Stefan Cherneski scored the winning goal, leading the team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds. This win represented the Wheat Kings’ seventh consecutive victory in the WHL, solidifying their position as a formidable contender in the league.
Success on the Volleyball Court
Two decades ago, the local women’s volleyball team, the Brandon Bobcats, showcased their dominance in an exhibition match against the Minot State-Bottineau Lady Jacks. The Bobcats swept the match with a decisive 3-0 victory, winning sets with scores of 30-12, 30-20, and 30-14. First-year middle Erin Visch Krahn played a pivotal role in leading her team to this impressive win, highlighting the talent present within the program.
These historical moments, spanning from bowling triumphs to hockey victories and volleyball successes, illustrate the vibrant sports culture that has flourished in the community. As athletes and teams continue to make their mark, local residents remain proud of their rich sports heritage.
