Bartholomew’s Pub Marks 50 Years of Tradition in Victoria

Bartholomew’s Pub in Victoria is poised to celebrate its 50th anniversary this October, commemorating not only five decades of service but also five years since its reopening following the COVID-19 pandemic. The festivities are set to unfold over a two-week period in mid-October, with plans still in development, according to bar manager and supervisor Kait Taylor. “We have many ideas, but we haven’t made a big plan yet. We will have a couple of weeks of things to celebrate the decades,” she stated.
The pub is known for its inviting atmosphere, characterized by a British theme that includes traditional decor and a menu featuring dishes like bangers & mash and Yorkshire puddings. Taylor describes the establishment as a “fun little place to work,” adding that it boasts a loyal clientele and an impressive selection of beverages. “Winter season’s also coming, which is exciting for us. It gets full and cozy and full of lights,” she remarked.
Celebrating Community and Tradition
Bartholomew’s fosters a sense of community with various events throughout the week. Every Sunday evening features live music, while traditional Irish music is showcased on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. The pub also hosts trivia nights on Tuesdays, wing nights on Wednesdays, and music bingo on Thursdays. A special ‘Happy Hour’ runs from 15:00 to close on Mondays, offering patrons the chance to enjoy high-quality spirits at cost price. “It’s pretty cool and people get to try new things,” Taylor said, noting the pub’s dedication to engaging its customers.
Floor supervisor Keely Bayko highlighted the importance of personal connections at Bartholomew’s. “Everyone can come to Bartholomew’s, whether you want a really nice cocktail or a good pint of Guinness, or just want to come for some happy hour food and enjoy spending time with friends,” she explained. The pub’s commitment to service helps cultivate a welcoming environment, encouraging regulars to return and share their own stories, including anniversaries celebrated at the venue.
Bartholomew’s offers a diverse drink selection, including over 80 types of gin and 26 beers on tap, with local favorites like Dark Matter and Appleton’s cider. Taylor noted that their gin selection is likely the largest in British Columbia. In terms of food, the pub’s signature offerings include the much-loved bangers & mash and beef dip, along with Sunday roasts available until they run out or the pub closes.
A Legacy of Character and Community
Originally opened 50 years ago, Bartholomew’s Pub was revitalized in 2020 under new ownership by Alderaan Hospitality Ltd.. Executive chef Jason Clifford and director of food and beverages Morgan Watson have worked to enhance the venue while maintaining its historical charm. Taylor remarked on the renovations, stating, “They’ve done some renovations over the years, including the layout of the bar top, but have really kept the characteristic of the pub largely the same.”
The pub is also known for its unique decor, featuring original artwork that has adorned the walls since its inception. “The pictures are seriously glued on the walls – you’d need a crowbar to pry them off,” joked Taylor, emphasizing the sentimental value of the establishment’s decor.
The pub attracts a mix of clientele, including tourists from nearby cruise ships and downtown visitors. Its location beneath the DoubleTree Victoria hotel adds to its foot traffic, allowing for a steady stream of patrons. The venue has also gained a reputation for screening major sports events, such as hockey games and soccer matches, with special setups for significant occasions.
With its emphasis on quality service and a vibrant atmosphere, Bartholomew’s Pub remains a beloved landmark in Victoria. As the anniversary approaches, both Taylor and Bayko encourage newcomers and regulars alike to join in the celebrations. “Just come and have a good time. It’s a fun place to be and we’ve got a lot of great staff,” Taylor advised.
