Alli Wiertel Leads Oswego Co-Op to Strong Finish at Golf Invite

In a standout performance, Alli Wiertel of the Oswego Co-Op secured medalist honors with a score of 70 at the Plainfield East Invite, helping her team achieve a commendable third-place finish. The tournament took place at Naperbrook Golf Course, where the Oswego Co-Op totaled 338 points, trailing only Lincoln-Way East, which posted a score of 317.
Supporting Wiertel’s performance, teammate Kendall Grant finished eighth with a score of 81. Other contributors included Annabelle Williams, who shot 91, and Giselle Resendez, who finished with 96.
Highlights from Other Sporting Events
In addition to the golf results, the weekend featured several notable performances across various sports. In girls cross country, Sunny Weber from Sandwich clinched victory in the Class 1A girls race at the First to the Finish Invite in Peoria, clocking in at 16:18.70.
In volleyball, the Newark team, boasting a record of 13-3, participated in the 16-team Bullet Invite at Williamsville, finishing seventh overall. Newark achieved victories against Monticello and Macomb but fell short against Rochester during pool play. In bracket play, they lost to Hartsburg-Emden but managed to defeat Lena-Winslow.
Rylie Carlson earned all-tournament honors, accumulating 30 kills, 32 digs, and five aces. Other standout players included Zoey Carlson with 24 kills and nine blocks, Heather Buhle contributing 24 kills and 35 digs, and Morgen Hergenhan with 58 digs.
The Sandwich volleyball team faced a challenging weekend, ending with a 1-4 record at their own invite. Their sole victory came against Indian Creek, while they suffered losses to Seneca, Yorkville Christian, and Reed-Custer.
Additional Results from Football and Soccer
In flag football, the Yorkville Tri team triumphed over Hersey with a score of 19-7, driven by two fourth-quarter touchdowns from Kayla Kersting. Earlier in the day, they faced a setback against Willowbrook, losing 26-0.
On the soccer field, Oswego East secured a victory over Andrew with a score of 3-1 in the opening match of the Plano Classic.
In boys golf, the Plano Reapers finished 11th at the Aurora Central Catholic Invite with a team score of 386, highlighted by Brandon Ramos’s low round of 85. Meanwhile, the Yorkville boys team concluded day two of the Redbird Classic at Weaver Ridge with a score of 329, featuring strong performances from Graham Martinson with 77, Ian Saar with 81, Robert Hren with 85, and Max Homerding with 86.
These events showcase the talent and competitiveness of the teams involved, marking a significant weekend in local sports.
