Advocates Demand Change as 1,350 Saskatchewan Students Excluded
Advocates are calling for urgent reforms in Saskatchewan’s education system following a report revealing that 1,350 students with disabilities faced early dismissal or exclusion from their schools. The report, released by Inclusion Saskatchewan and obtained through a freedom of information request, highlights significant gaps in support for these students across 18 school divisions.
The findings indicate that many of these students experienced changes in their attendance, including part-time schedules, temporary exclusions, or complete removal from the classroom. This situation has placed added strain on families, many of whom must adjust their work commitments to care for their children during these absences.
Brittany Acton, director of initiatives at Inclusion Saskatchewan, emphasized the severe consequences of these exclusions. She noted that some parents have lost their jobs and even their housing due to the demands of providing care. Acton expressed concern that removing students with complex needs from classrooms not only hampers their social development but also negatively impacts their academic skills.
The report attributes these exclusions primarily to budget constraints and insufficient funding, as well as a shortage of educational assistants in schools. Acton pointed out that while the issue of inclusion has always been a concern, it appears to be worsening, moving further away from the ideals of equitable education for all students.
Government Response and Future Actions
In response to the report, the government of Saskatchewan has reiterated its commitment to prioritizing education and ensuring that students receive the necessary supports to thrive. Officials stated that they are actively working on strategies to enhance educational resources and improve support systems within schools.
Despite these assurances, advocates remain skeptical about the effectiveness of these measures. They argue that without substantial changes to funding and resource allocation, the situation for students with disabilities will likely continue to deteriorate. The community is calling for a comprehensive review of the policies governing educational support for students with complex needs, urging the government to take immediate and decisive action to address this pressing issue.
As discussions continue, families and advocates are hopeful that attention to these challenges will lead to meaningful change. The struggle for inclusion in Saskatchewan schools remains a critical topic, and stakeholders are determined to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to learn and grow alongside their peers.
