Dr. Heather Emmerton-Coughlin, a dedicated surgeon in Victoria, has emerged as a leading advocate for women’s health and cancer care. Recognized this week as the Inspiring Island Woman, she is committed to improving the lives of those affected by breast cancer, a disease that impacts one in eight women globally and accounts for 13 percent of all cancer-related deaths among women.

The journey to surgery was not straightforward for Emmerton-Coughlin. Initially captivated by the prospect of space exploration, she considered a career as an astronaut. However, after interning with the Canadian Space Agency and working on the Canadarm, she realized that the solitary nature of the role was not for her. “It isn’t the same as being able to really sit with people here and interact with people and eventually to help people,” she reflected on her decision to pivot towards medicine.

Emmerton-Coughlin’s impact extends beyond the operating room. She played a pivotal role in establishing the South Island breast cancer program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to expedite care for women diagnosed with breast cancer. “System delays are often one of the hardest parts,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of timely treatment. “We wanted to make sure women were getting their care as efficiently as possible, and this has really allowed for that.”

Her compassion for her patients was profoundly shaped during her residency when she met a young woman in her twenties who was already in palliative care. The encounter taught Emmerton-Coughlin that joy and meaning can exist even in the most challenging circumstances. “There can be joy even in those darkest moments, where there isn’t hope still for a cure but there is hope for a meaningful life,” she stated.

In addition to her surgical expertise, Emmerton-Coughlin actively contributes to fundraising efforts for healthcare advancements. At the Victoria Hospitals Foundation‘s Visions Gala in November, she helped raise a record $3.7 million for surgical care. “She always makes it really clear how transformational it is, the equipment that our donors fund for her practice or her patients,” remarked Colleen Bronson from the foundation. “She expresses that she feels that impact every day.”

Despite the demanding nature of her work and the challenges faced in healthcare, Emmerton-Coughlin finds fulfillment in her role. As a mother of two and a surgeon with over 14 years of experience, she balances her professional and personal life with grace. “I feel blessed every day that I get to do what I do,” she said. “We are so privileged to live on this beautiful Island.”

The current campaign by the Victoria Hospitals Foundation focuses on supporting women’s health initiatives. Those interested in contributing to this cause can visit their website for more information.

Dr. Emmerton-Coughlin continues to inspire her community, advocating for women’s health while delivering compassionate care to those battling cancer. Her story serves as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have in the lives of many.
