Victoria Fitness Instructor Inspires Movement and Community Growth
A fitness instructor in Victoria, British Columbia, is making significant strides in redefining fitness and aging. Justina Bailey has dedicated her career to helping individuals embrace movement, regardless of age or ability. With over 35 years of experience, Bailey teaches both in-person and online group fitness classes, receiving heartfelt praise from her students.
Bailey’s journey into fitness began at a young age. At around 16, while attending the YMCA, she was encouraged by a male instructor to consider becoming a fitness instructor. “You look like you’re having a good time,” he told her, igniting a passion that would shape her future.
Empowering Through Understanding
Bailey’s teaching philosophy focuses on understanding the unique capabilities of each student. Her classes have attracted a diverse group of participants, including those with chronic conditions. Students appreciate her individualized approach, which combines respect for their limitations with encouragement to push their boundaries.
“She’s so respectful of everyone’s limitations,” said Peggy Howard, a regular attendee. “She takes the time to look at how you’re doing an exercise, correct you where necessary, and applaud you when you succeed.” This supportive environment has fostered a sense of community among participants, many of whom have formed lasting friendships.
Another student, Libby Rush, highlighted the transformative experience of attending Bailey’s classes. “I have a chronic disease,” Rush shared. “When I come to Justina, I don’t have it. She transports me.” Such sentiments reflect Bailey’s impact on her students, who often describe her as an inspiration and source of hope.
Bailey’s commitment to ongoing education sets her apart in the fitness industry. She actively collaborates with health professionals, including orthodontists and pelvic floor physiotherapists, to integrate their insights into her classes. “This is an organism we’re talking about,” Bailey explained, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to fitness.
A Growing Community and Recognized Excellence
Bailey’s popularity is evident in the growth of her classes. What began with only six participants in Oak Bay has expanded to 35, with classes consistently at capacity. Recently, she was recognized as one of Canada’s top fitness instructors by Impact magazine, a testament to her dedication and influence in the community.
Students describe Bailey as “inspiring, understanding, patient, knowledgeable, and always learning,” according to Sheridan Cooper. Her ability to adapt exercises for different abilities helps students feel empowered as they age. “It’s almost easier to accept aging because she’s teaching us how to adapt,” Cooper added.
Bailey reciprocates the admiration, stating, “We’re a good team; I think I support them as much as they support me back.” This mutual respect strengthens the bond within the class, creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued.
In a world where fitness often carries misconceptions, Justina Bailey stands out, not only for her extensive knowledge but also for her unwavering support and encouragement. Her mission to instill a love of movement is resonating widely, contributing to healthier lifestyles and a more connected community.
Through her work, Bailey continues to challenge the stereotypes surrounding fitness and aging, inspiring many to embrace movement as a lifelong journey.
