Sault Area Hospital (SAH) is set to launch an innovative Virtual Home Waiting Room (VHWR) aimed at non-urgent patients visiting the Emergency Department. This new service allows individuals to wait for their care in the comfort of their own homes or chosen locations, as opposed to a traditional hospital waiting room. The initiative is designed to enhance patient convenience and streamline the emergency care process.

Dr. Stephen Smith, Vice President of Medical Affairs and an Emergency Department Physician at SAH, expressed enthusiasm about the VHWR. “We are excited to introduce an innovative Virtual Home Waiting Room for patients who would rather wait in the comfort of their home or other location and do not want to wait in a hospital waiting room,” he stated.

The VHWR is specifically for patients experiencing non-urgent conditions such as coughs, colds, sore throats, earaches, rashes, dental pain, prescription renewals, suture or staple removal, minor cuts and scrapes, as well as sprains and strains.

Enhancing Patient Experience and Operational Efficiency

Developed in partnership with organizations including Luma Health, MEDITECH, and One Hits, the VHWR project aims to improve the overall patient experience. By utilizing Luma’s Queue Manager, both patients and medical staff will gain real-time insights into emergency department throughput, integrated with MEDITECH systems.

According to Aditya Bansod, Co-founder and CTO of Luma Health, “SAH’s patients will be the first in Canada to benefit from a new standard of consumer-first access to ED care.” It is important to note that while the VHWR allows patients to wait remotely, registration and care will still occur upon arrival at the Emergency Department.

Patients can access the VHWR through the SAH website and will receive live text updates every 60 minutes about their estimated waiting time. This system not only prioritizes patient comfort but also allows medical staff to focus on urgent cases by reducing congestion in the emergency department.

Future Expansion Plans

Launched in November 2024, the VHWR program currently accommodates ten patients per day, with plans to expand this capacity in the future. As Ontario’s Emergency Departments face increasing patient volumes and pressures, SAH is looking to extend the VHWR beyond just emergency care.

This initiative represents a significant step forward in adapting healthcare services to meet the evolving needs of patients. For more information on the VHWR program, visit the SAH website at https://sah.on.ca/programs-services.

The implementation of the Virtual Home Waiting Room is supported by funding from the federal government through the Local Journalism Initiative, highlighting the commitment to improving healthcare access and delivery in the region.
